Opole Cathedral

Historical

The stately cathedral of the Holy Cross, built of red brick, is one of the most characteristic monuments of Opole. It towers over the city with two soaring towers, 76 meters each, which make the parish church the tallest building in the city. It is difficult to imagine the Opole cathedral without them. The towers, which added lightness to the temple, were not built until the 19th century. Construction works were completed in 1899. But it was not the only reconstruction of the church. Today's cathedral was built in the 15th century in place of churches built in the 11th and 13th centuries. The first church was probably erected here during the times of Bolesław Chrobry. It is worth emphasizing - in the temple there is a painting of Our Lady of Opole, brought to the city in 1702 from Piekary Śląskie.
